Professional Driveway & Path Ground Preparation
A long-lasting driveway or pathway starts with the groundwork underneath it.
The Digger Man provides professional driveway excavation, path preparation and groundwork across Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire and the Cotswolds, helping homeowners, landscapers and contractors prepare sites correctly before the finished surface is installed.
Whether you are replacing an old driveway, creating additional parking, installing a new garden path or preparing an area for paving, gravel or another hard landscaping surface, I can take care of the excavation and preparation needed to get the project ready for the next stage.
Driveway Excavation & Preparation
Preparing a driveway involves much more than simply removing the existing surface. The ground needs to be excavated to a suitable depth, levels established and the area prepared to receive the appropriate sub-base.

I can assist with:
- Excavating existing driveways and hardstanding
- Removing soil, stone and old surface materials
- Digging out areas for driveway extensions
- Levelling and grading the ground
- Preparing the formation for sub-base installation
- Creating falls to help manage surface water
- Preparing areas for gravel, block paving and other driveway finishes
- Excavating around existing walls, boundaries and landscaping
- Using a compact mini digger also means many residential properties can be accessed without the disruption associated with much larger machinery.
Garden Path & Walkway Preparation
New paths can completely change how a garden or outdoor space is used, but they still need a stable foundation.
I provide excavation and ground preparation for garden paths, entrance paths, side access routes and landscaped walkways, creating the correct levels and removing unsuitable ground before your chosen surface is installed.
This can include paths finished with gravel, paving slabs, natural stone or other landscaping materials.
Why Good Ground Preparation Matters
The finished driveway or pathway is only as good as the ground beneath it. Poor preparation can contribute to movement, uneven surfaces, standing water and premature deterioration.
Correct excavation and preparation helps create:
A stable foundation
Removing unsuitable material allows the correct sub-base to be installed.
Better drainage
Levels and falls can be considered before the finished surface goes down.
A cleaner finished project
Accurate excavation gives landscapers and paving contractors a properly prepared area to work from.
Longer-lasting results
Getting the groundwork right from the beginning can reduce the likelihood of settlement and future repairs.
Working With Homeowners, Landscapers & Contractors
I regularly provide groundwork support for homeowners carrying out their own landscaping projects as well as professional landscapers and contractors who need an experienced digger operator to prepare a site.
You deal directly with me from the initial enquiry through to the work on site, with a focus on keeping the job organised, tidy and straightforward.
The wider site already positions Richard as a qualified and insured local operator covering Stratford-upon-Avon, Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire and the Cotswolds, so this wording keeps the service page consistent with the rest of the website.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you install the finished driveway?
My main role is the excavation and groundwork preparation required before the finished driveway or pathway is installed. If you already have a landscaper, driveway installer or builder, I can work alongside them to prepare the area ready for their work.
Can you remove an existing driveway?
Yes. Depending on the existing construction and access to the property, I can excavate old driveway surfaces and the material underneath ready for the new driveway construction.
Can a mini digger access a normal residential garden?
Often, yes. Compact machinery is particularly useful for residential projects where access can be limited. If access looks particularly tight, send over photographs or measurements and I can advise.
Can you prepare an area for a gravel driveway?
Yes. Gravel driveways still require proper excavation, levels and a suitable foundation. The site already has a dedicated guide on laying gravel driveways, so I would also internally link this answer to that article.
Can you help with drainage at the same time?
Yes, where additional drainage or excavation is required this can often be incorporated into the groundwork. The Digger Man also provides dedicated drainage and trenching services, so I would internally link relevant wording here to those service pages.
How much does driveway excavation cost?
Every project is slightly different. Price will depend on the size of the area, excavation depth, ground conditions, access, existing materials and whether spoil needs to be removed. Send over a few details and photographs for an initial discussion and quotation.
